[Safe Harbour Program]

Smart. Simple. Visionary.

The Safe Harbour Program promotes an inclusive BC that celebrates strong, vibrant, and diverse communities.

Coordinated by the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of BC (AMSSA), Safe Harbour is a BC-wide diversity program that provides a simple, practical, and effective way for storefront businesses and agencies to better understand and serve an increasingly diverse population.

Members of our communities, whether they are immigrants or refugees, people with disabilities, or same-sex partners, are often unsure whether a business, organization or institution will be receptive to them.

Provide a Safe Harbour for Diversity in Your Community

There are now over 350 Safe Harbours serving urban and rural communities across BC. At the moment there are 21 in Prince George.

These Safe Harbour locations display a colourful window decal to publicly demonstrate their respect for all ethnicities, religions, ages, abilities, genders and sexualities.

Safe Harbours Across BC

Safe Harbour businesses and agencies make three main commitments:

  1. Equitable treatment: Treating all of their clients and/or customers in an equitable manner. If a concern is expressed regarding a lack of equitable treatment, staff members take this concern seriously and take steps to address it.
  2. Providing a "Safe Harbour": Being a safe place where a community member will receive a helping hand, such as a place to sit, a telephone to use, and information about how to seek further assistance.
  3. Prepared employees: Trained staff commit to sharing the program with their colleagues through a review of Safe Harbour in their Participant's Workbook and discussion about how to better welcome diversity.

Proud Beginnings

Safe Harbour Program began in Nanaimo in 2004.

The Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies has partnered with non-profit agencies, including MHS here in PG, & in 30 communities across the province to recruit and facilitate Safe Harbour orientation sessions, free-of-charge, for staff from publicly accessible businesses, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, community policing offices, libraries and other workplaces.
